Just Between Us
Just
Between Us
« No
One Understand Me »
What
I come to write is a true story happened
every time and in every place, but few of us want to talk about.
When Kada said he wanted to talk,I knew from his eyes it was going
to be a heavy conversation. And it was. Kada hated his parents and didn’t have much
respect for any other adults. He wanted to tell me why.
Kada was known as a troublemaker- a rebel
in our Lycee.Students didn’t like to be around him because he always had a
scowl on his face, and he didn’t show any respect to his teachers.
When I first saw Kada closely as a student
,it was when he became my student in
terminal class. I wondered about him.I
was talking to supervisor, and he sat there in administration as usual waiting for a pass just glaring at me.He saw me as
another adult and as a threat or so I
assumed.
But as time went on,the teens and I started
sharing thoughts and ideas, and he seemed to warm up a bit. So when I gave him a
chance to talk, I realised he no longer considered me as a threat.
What
he told me changed my outlook on Kada
and even to other students on his behaviour .Kada ‘s entourage belittled
him at a young age.He confessed to me that he couldn’t remember the last time his parent said anything nice to
him or anything good about him as I was doing.
They regularly told him that he was the
cause of all their problems, their sour marriage that ended in divorce, living in
poverty and father getting hooked on hashish .He got the blame, and with the
blame came frequent beatings. Kada was slapped so many times that more hostility was brought to the family
.
Finally Kada gave up and quit trying to
communicate with either one of them. And from there his reputation grew as an
enemy of society including himself .He would do anything to have people just
listen to his side before they made judgements about the type of person he is.
But in vain ,he set alone.
‘’Everybody calls me a rebel.But all I ‘m
doing is reacting to the way my parent, and other adults treat me .Even other
teachers treat me like I’m a problem.’’
Kada had a good point. Why do we judge
students before we get to know them ?
Why do we judge them by the way they look or the way they dress,… ?
All of us should try to get to know the
Kadas in our shools.we don’t want to let a negative attitude influence us,but
we may be on the way to making a difference in some’s life- just by listening.
We all have our own stories, and we all need
to be a little more willing to listen to someone else’s story before we make
judgements.
I can’t find the words to describe what feeling came
over me when each time I see Kada as he
will be getting his diploma as a teacher of english in a few months, and you don’t
know how much that made me think. I plan to show this article to all teachers
after a long hesitation.
